"Walled Garden"

• Metaphor: Pleasent garden contained by this wall where growth is limited and is private.
• There are barriers which are controlled by the gatekeepers (companies)
• Protected, no public access "safe"
• The growth of new technology is contained by this "wall"
• The growth is limited and already set by the gatekeepers
• DANGERS: Are we comfortable with giving that much power to something that can be used against us? (ex: iBrick)
• iBrick: When the iPhone was created it was pre-programed, once people learned how to change the software to allow different cell phone providers to use iPhone, which were not AT&T, Apple discovered a way to shut that down. They were able to create iBrick which essentially just destroyed the iPhone, and made it incapable of being used by other service providers.
